Challenged by the energy crisis in 2008, South Africa has stepped up its efforts to improve its energy efficiency. South African Bureau of Standards has proposed to adopt energy management standard, Treasury is offering allowance for energy efficiency investment. The National Electricity Response Team is coordinating the effort of the energy intensive user group and numerous initiatives have been taken by the private sector.
In this context, UNIDO, with the support and the participation of the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department of Energy and the private sector will implement the Industrial Energy Efficiency Improvement project. The project will be hosted by the National Cleaner Production Centre, an agency of the dti. The initiative will aim at achieving a significant shift in industrial energy practices in South Africa by supporting the introduction of the Energy Management Standard and the implementation of a system optimization practice at company level. In order to achieve these goals, the project seeks to stimulate the development of energy efficiency services through the reinforcement of institutional capacities, training of managers and practitioners, energy audits, and demonstration projects.
An inception workshop was held at the Auditorium of Anglo American in Johannesburg on 18 September 2009. The workshop provided key stakeholders with up-dated information on the status of energy efficiency on the international scene and the progress made in South Africa. Attendees also had the opportunity to discuss technical details of system efficiency as well as effective measurement and verification scheme for industry.
